Fieldhouse ribbon-cutting with Mayor Miller a big success
The Sorauren Park Fieldhouse was officially opened May 5 with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by approximately 600 residents and a gathering of VIPs. A sold-out BBQ hosted by Mitzi’s Café, the start of the soccer season, and perfect weather made the evening a memorable affair.
In attendance were Mayor David Miller, Ward 14 Councillor Gord Perks, and Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash and MPP Cheri DiNovo. Parks, Forestry and Recreation General Manager Brenda Librecz was master of ceremonies for an event that featured short speeches by Mayor Miller, Councillor Perks and Wabash Building Society chairperson Doug Bennet.
The new washrooms got their first serious work-out and came through beautifully! (Though they still need signs on the doors.) Residents also got a chance to see the beautiful new kitchen donated by Aya Kitchens.
The Fieldhouse isn’t completely finished — it still needs floors, paint, and other details — but the washrooms will be open during the sports season to start.
The new Sorauren Park Farmers’ Market had a booth at the event to promote its upcoming inaugural season, starting with “mini-markets” on May 12 and 19, and the full market on May 26.
Also, on May 31, the first Roncesvalles Avenue Yard Sale, a neighbourhood-wide event, takes place. In addition to being a new a great way to sell unused stuff, the organizers have designated the event as a fundraiser for the Wabash Building Society. Learn more at raysmay312008.blogspot.com.
